Birmingham - Robber A. Ahmed jailed after being caught hiding in garden shed

An armed robber has been jailed for 12 years - after being caught hiding in a shed by West Midlands Police.

Ahmed Harun Ahmed, 23, threatened a shop worker with what he claimed was a gun in one raid.

Then, while on police bail, he was part of a gang who left a family terrified in their own home as they tried to steal their cars.

Ahmed, of Glovers Road, Small Heath , was jailed at Birmingham Crown Court after being convicted of two counts of attempted robbery and possession of an imitation firearm.

The court heard the balaclava-wearing raider burst into Shah Foodstore in Bordesley Green on March 22 last year and demanded staff hand over cash.

During the attempted robbery, he threatened to fire a 'weapon' which was wrapped in a carrier bag.

But he fled empty-handed when the worker refused to hand over money.

A search of a nearby park led to a police dog recovering the balaclava and a metal pipe - the supposed firearm - with fingerprints and CCTV linking Ahmed to the crime.
Yet while on court bail he was among three men who stormed into a home in Francis Road on November 2 and threatened the occupant.

Family members, including young children, locked themselves away in a bedroom. The thugs swiped car keys but failed to steal any vehicles.

Ahmed, who had been at the address previously doing maintenance work, was later found hiding in a shed at his home.

An imitation firerarm, an orange BB gun, was recovered.

In a statement after the case, West Midlands Police said: "These attempted robberies were clearly targeted and intended to cause fear and distress to the victims.

"Ahmed continued to deny any involvement in the terrifying ordeals despite overwhelming evidence in both cases.

"Ahmed was already under the terms of a suspended prison sentence for possessing an imitation firearm in a public place so had clearly not learned his lesson."
