Somaliland army secures voter registration areas, repulses Puntland Militia

Hargeisa - The Republic of ‪Somaliland‬ National Army moved to support the security of a voting registration office near the border on 18th July 2016.

Puntland militia forces made their way to a military base of Somaliland following an incursion by Puntland militia forces 40 km from Dhahar village. The Somaliland army successfully repulsed the attack by Puntland, which was not the first of its kind by Puntland forces, but follows a pattern of provocative behaviour by Puntland which aims to undermine the peace and stability in border regions of Somaliland. After exchanging fire between the two military forces it resulted the arrest of a dozen others and the seizure of a ‘technical’ vehicle of Puntland militia.

Although the exact reason for this outrageous attack remains unclear, it is thought that Puntland hoped to undermine Somaliland’s efforts to hold ‪democratic‬ elections next year. However, the fact remains that the Government of Somaliland continues to exercise its authority and legitimacy by protecting its citizens and maintaining peace.
The Republic of Somaliland has long demonstrated its commitment to the peaceful resolution of disputes with its neighbours. It is a peaceful country that has provided a safe haven to its citizens for over 25 years. However, it would seem that Puntland is instead seeking to provoke tensions and incite violence. Nevertheless, the Government of the Republic of Somaliland has made it clear that it will not tolerate the presence of Puntland militia on Somaliland soil, which would be a recipe for civil unrest and violence.
