Somaliland FM meets his Ethiopian counterpart to discuss Berbera Corridor

Addis Ababa, 10 September, 2016 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Saad Ali Shire met with his counterpart Dr. Tedros Adhanom in Addis Ababa for the first time in his capacity as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Somaliland.

 They engaged in constructive discussions about the Addis-Berbera Road Corridor and agreed on the need to ensure the road from Berbera to Wajaale is completed before DP World began to operate at full capacity. Ethiopia has committed to bring up to 30% of its exports and imports through Berbera, which makes the Berbera road to Wajaale vital for trade between the two countries.

They also briefly discussed the upcoming elections in Somaliland, and the status of a number of trade and economic agreements which Minister Shire hopes Ethiopia will shortly act upon. Dr Saad Ali Shire, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Republic of Somaliland, affirmed that: “The Republic of Somaliland is an independent country with defined borders. The Republic of Somaliland has historical relations with Ethiopia in terms of trade and security.” The meeting with Dr Tedros, arrives on the heels of the Foreign Minister’s recent visit to Cairo to meet with the Egyptian Foreign Minister and his Cabinet colleagues.
The Foreign Minister also used the occasion of his visit to thank the Ethiopian government for providing 115 educations scholarships to citizens from the Republic of Somaliland.
