Somaliland Presidential Candidate for Waddani Party to speak at Chatham House

London- Hon Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi “Irro” MP, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Somaliland; Presidential Candidate for the Waddani Party will address the academics and political experts at Chatham  House, London on the 15th of March 2017.

Repeated delays and extensions to parliamentary, local and presidential elections in the self-declared Republic of Somaliland signal a stalling in its democratic trajectory.

Presidential elections are now scheduled for Nov. 2017, but a sustained humanitarian response is required to assist millions of people at risk of famine in the region, with severe drought hampering voter registration. In addition, both Houses of Parliament recently approved the establishment of a UAE military base in Berbera, following an earlier deal with DP World to upgrade and manage the town’s port, which it is hoped will bring further investment to Somaliland.
Hon Abdirahman M. Abdillahi will discuss the parliament’s role in ensuring accountable responses to Somaliland’s challenges, and reflect on how institutions of oversight can be strengthened.
