MoFA meets journalists and the media in Somaliland

Hargeisa, 09 April, 2017 - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of  Somaliland met with journalists and media representatives from Somaliland in an effort to improve understanding, cooperation and the exchange of information.

The Minister and senior officials from the Ministry held the press conference to inform the media about its work, to answer questions from journalists in a candid manner, and to encourage the media to inform the Somaliland public about positive developments.

Foreign Minister Saad Ali Shire noted the valuable contribution made by journalists to democracy in Somaliland, and noted that the Government had put in place the conditions for the media to practice freedom of expression. Nevertheless, he noted that the media had a duty to adhere to the law and ethical norms, and to ensure that stories were factual and accurate.
The Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of recognition for Somaliland and encouraged the press to support Somaliland’s ongoing recognition efforts, saying; "It is not only the Ministry's responsibility to seek recognition but also the responsibility of our journalists to seek to achieve recognition. The people of Somaliland have a government that fulfils all the international requirements of statehood."

The State Minister, Mohamed Bogoreh, added that "before receiving international recognition the people of Somaliland must first recognise themselves. The media plays a crucial role in supporting recognition by educating the world about Somaliland and its achievements."
The Vice Minister, Ahmed Ismail, informed those present about the recent boat attack off the coast of Yemen, which included a number of Somaliland nationals. He requested that the families of those who had lost their loved ones to contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Somaliland using the following number 0634118093.
The Director of Communication Saleebaan Mahamuud Daahir who organised this meeting also spoke about the importance of having social media. The Director said: "the Ministry is planning to promote its social media presence by increasing its engagement with people from all over world. Social media will help to educate the world about Somaliland and will most likely contribute towards international recognition."
The Ministry hopes that the meet-the-press event will happen on a quarterly basis and will lead to improved communications and understanding, and better quality reporting.
